This workshop will compare and examine characteristics of ecological and social justice struggles, sharing first-hand experience and drawing on research documenting the evolution of generational, land-based, cultural resistance and associated African American and Hispano movements in rural communities of color (in the Black Belt region of the U.S. south and high desert regions of northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado), each representing unique ecosystems and illuminating embodied practices of and ecological survival. Through the presentation of relevant literature, debates and critiques and group discussions, participants will reflect upon the interaction of social and ecological systems, issue and identity politics, and embodied cultural and livelihood practices and will work together to identify and envision embodied and cooperative frameworks for supporting and shaping inclusive approaches to ecological and human well-being, drawing on the information presented as well as their own experiences, the physical and cultural landscapes of their communities/regions and in the face of increasing social and environmental instability and economic, racial and geographic inequities.
